Where to dine in Bumthang

Most of the good restaurants and cafes in Bumthang center around Jakar.

Café Perk

Main street Jakar, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Phone: 177329217

This is one of the best cafes in Bhutan and serves exceptionally good milk shakes, smoothies and sundaes. The coffee machines are all Italian style and the pizza and pasta options are also impressive. It is quite heartening to see the umpteen pure vegetarian options in the menu as Bhutan’s palette is generally not very friendly towards non-meat eaters.

The prices are a little on the higher side but you will get comfort food like masala chai and French fries and banana pancakes and authentic brownies. A good place to go to when you are bored with Bhutanese food.

Himalayan Pizza

Southern end of Jakar
9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Phone: 17725819

In case you are craving for some tasty yet localised Pizza then you can visit the Himalayan Pizza shop. It produces nice cheese and tomato pizza along with delicious varieties of moos that are served with an exotic carrot-chilli-tomato shop. The menu selection is like the Himalayan Pizza shop in Paro.

You can ask the couple running the pizza shop to add whatever vegetables you want to the pizza. For the health, conscious tourists, there are healthy options like carrot and spinach soup.

Another great place in Bumthang to have locally grown and freshly cooked food, this one serves Italian and Tibetan food too apart from Bhutanese and Chinese. The momos and the emma datsi along with the pork based dishes come highly recommended.
